We Tried Six Different Dry Shampoos and Here's What We Found
Over the past few weeks, the Virtuosa co-founders all tried six different dry shampoos and are here to report our findings!
Batiste - $7.99 for 6.73 oz.
Alexandra: This was the best spray I tried, of the three we tested. However, I prefer using a powder. The sprays make my hair feel stiff, as if I used hairspray.
Caitlin: I normally don’t like sprays because I have very thin, fine hair and it weighs it down – but this one is actually pretty good! It smells great, and if sprays work for you – this is a quality product at a great price. My only complaint is that it looks great in the beginning – really helps with body, but it seems to only last for a few hours for me before I need to reapply.
Tamara: This is my go-to so I’m biased. My mom got it for me a few years ago and I’ve never had a reason to try anything else. I love how it smells (I use the Blush fragrance) and it’s easy to put on because of the spray form. It’s also very affordable!
Living Proof - $12 for 1.8oz.
Alexandra: Ahhh! My hair looked like it was spray painted white! I managed to blend it in but there were still flecks of white in my hair afterward. My hair did feel cleaner afterward, though stiff and difficult to run my fingers through.
Caitlin: It turned my hair white when I sprayed it on. At first I freaked out, but was able to blend it in with my blonde hair. I thought performance was pretty good, and I liked the smell – though it was a little strong.
Tamara: Yikes, I really didn’t like the smell of this one – something about it was strange and it felt very artificial. I prefer sprays to powders so on the margin I preferred this to other dry shampoos, and in terms of functionality it worked fine and my hair felt cleaner afterwards.
Bumble and Bumble - $14 for 0.5oz.
Alexandra: This one was pretty good, but expensive. The powder is very fine, so it doesn’t leave visible residue like other powders can.
Caitlin: This one is OK. I prefer a powder, since I’m blonde it is easy to blend so it beats most of the sprays for me. It was really difficult to put in – there is no nozzle you just kind of shake it and hope for the best. I had to put it in my hands first then rub in. Performance is good and the smell is not overpowering, but it was pretty pricey.
Tamara: This one had no smell, which was odd. I am not a fan of powders, but tried putting this into my hands first and then into my hair which didn’t seem to work. In the end it felt like I used too much product and it didn’t actually have any impact on my hair.
Oscar Blandi Pronto - $11 for 1oz.
Alexandra: I like how this one has a nozzle that you can rake through your hair to apply the dry shampoo directly to your scalp. I am not a huge fan of the scent, which is overpowering.
Caitlin: From a performance standpoint, this one was probably the best, but I really hate the smell – very strong, citrus/lemony. Again, I am partial to powders – this one has a little nozzle to help you apply a bit easier, but still powders are tougher than sprays to put on.
Tamara: This was my first powder dry shampoo. I didn’t like the powder form because I can’t tell how much I’m putting in my hair in areas I can’t see, like the back of my head. With a spray, I can feel how much I’m applying. Also, this one smells like baby powder – not my favorite.
Dove - $4.63 for 5oz.
Alexandra: I hate this one! It was exactly like putting in hair spray. I couldn’t run a comb or my fingers through my hair at all after spraying this on my roots. It made my hair feel like it had a ton of product weighing it down.
Caitlin: I bought this product (my first dry shampoo) after pouring over reviews. It was recommended from very credible sources as the best bang for your buck – that it outperformed even the more expensive options. It could be the nature of my hair (fine, thin, oily), but this was like spraying on think heavy hair spray. It made my hair look dirtier. Yuck.
Tamara: This one smelled like hairspray to me and left my hair feeling a bit oily. But I liked how easy it was to put on – I’m biased towards sprays rather than powders.
One Love Organics - $12 for 0.6oz.
Alexandra: This one is my favorite, partly because the ingredients are natural and high quality, and partly because the performance is very good. My hair feels really clean after using this, and the scent is light and fresh.
Caitlin: Not crazy about the performance on this one. I like a stronger smell to help my hair feel fresher, but for those who are sensitive to strong smells, this may be a great option.
Tamara: I used this after an intense workout and my hair smelled completely normal after applying it. Once again, it’s a powder so I’m not pleased with the application process, but I do like the smell. However, it’s a bit pricey for me!
The Virtuosa Challenge
You’re not supposed to wash your hair every day. Dermatologists and hairstylists are in agreement on this issue: washing your hair less frequently is better for the appearance and the health of your hair. Everyday washing strips the scalp of natural oils, and it produces even more to compensate for the loss. So paradoxically, frequent hair washing can make your hair look and feel even more oily.
Having said all of this…I will admit that until a month ago, I still washed my hair every day. The reason? When you transition to washing your hair less frequently, there is an adjustment period you’ll go through. Your hair needs to be re-trained so that it produces less oil. Basically, it’s a couple of weeks of suffering in exchange for prettier, healthier hair in the long run. But every time I had tried to skip washes in the past, I gave up after the second day because I felt gross.
Tamara, my co-founder, took the plunge a few months ago and has been raving about all the extra time she has now that she only washes her hair every two or three days. Plus, her hair has been looking amazing lately – even on day three. I decided that I would give it a try, and stick with it this time. Here’s an account of my hair journey over the past month:
Day 1: Evening shampoo
I wash my hair in the evening and spend about 30 minutes (the usual) blow drying and flat ironing my hair.
Day 2: Virtuosa day!
I wake up (30 minutes later than usual!), brush my teeth, don my Virtuosa shower cap and hop in the shower. It takes me about three minutes to wash my face and body, towel dry, and whip the cap off my head. I’m thrilled with the new morning routine!
Day 3: Virtuosa day, evening shampoo
I won’t lie, my hair feels pretty gross this morning. I committed to the challenge, though, so I once again shower with the cap protecting my (now oily) hair. After I dry off and get dressed, I massage some dry shampoo into my roots, somehow managing to sprinkle the white powder all over my silk blouse. Note to self: don’t use the dry shampoo while wearing clothes – do it right after the shower while still wearing a towel or robe.
By 3pm, I’m despairing. I duck into the restroom to pin my bangs back and throw my hair into a ponytail. I desperately need to get it off my face and neck. I’m starting to feel self-conscious that other people will know that my hair is dirty.
The shower after my evening workout is heavenly. I’ve never enjoyed washing my hair so much.
Day 4: Virtuosa day!
Uneventful day, hair-wise. Pretty happy to have the extra time in the morning again. It’s amazing to only have to deal with a quick shower and a bit of makeup application in the morning.
Day 5: Virtuosa day, evening shampoo
Not so happy this morning with the greasy hair feeling. I apply some dry shampoo and pin my bangs back so they’re not on my face. Today I manage to make it through the whole day without putting my hair in a ponytail until my evening dance practice. The shower this night is once again glorious.
I’ve gotten creative about what I do with my hair when it’s starting to feel oily on the second day. I’ve been pinning my bangs back in little poufs or tucking them to the side, and if I’m really feeling uncomfortable, I’ll put it in a high ponytail. I will admit that the ponytail is shinier and bouncier than ever before.
It’s become much more bearable to go 48 hours in between washes, and I’ve been loving the extra time I have in the mornings! It really seems like my hair has been adapting to the less frequent washings – my scalp is feeling less oily, even on the second day.
By now, I have my routine pretty much down pat: I shower and wash my hair after my Monday evening workout, and use the Virtuosa shower cap for my Tuesday morning shower. Tuesday evening, I apply the dry shampoo before bed, so that it has time to settle in and work its magic overnight. Wednesday morning, I once again shower with the cap, and re-apply more dry shampoo if necessary. By Wednesday evening (after another workout), I’m ready to wash and style my hair again. This cycle repeats, and I again wash my hair on Friday evening and then Sunday evening after yoga.
Going from washing my hair and styling it seven times per week to just three to four times per week has made such a huge difference for me. I’m saving at least two hours a week and I get to set my alarm later in the morning.
I’m absolutely keeping this as part of my beauty routine, and I’m sure the results will get even better over the next month and beyond. Are you up for the challenge?
Virtuosa Beauty co-founder and CEO Caitlin Palmer gives her take on ‘spring cleaning’ and starting fresh.
My mother will not be surprised when I admit that I have never actually done a deep clean of my apartment during spring time (a.k.a. spring cleaning). Let’s just say making my bed and keeping my room tidy were not my strengths as a kid. But I do think the spirit behind spring cleaning – revitalization, purging, cleansing – is an important practice in life, and it doesn’t need to be confined to one time each year. Continuously assessing and revamping my priorities, routine and surroundings are essential for me to reenergize and feel like I am making progress.
My ‘spring cleaning’ plan to life follows a slightly different schedule….
Declutter the physical. I move a lot. Like 6 times in the last 8 years. Even though it is painful and makes the packing 3x longer, I evaluate each item before it is placed in a moving box, donation pile or the trash. Is this sunscreen expired? Have I used this blanket since I moved here? Will this shirt ever come back in style? My husband’s favorite – I test every single pen to see if it has ink. My constant moving will (hopefully) slow down soon, so I will need to find a way to stay on top of the clutter but for now – once per move works for me.
Revamp health and wellness routine. Once a month I reflect on how I am feeling. Am I tired? Do my jeans fit? Does my skin look and feel healthy? I go through a check list and then make some goals. Most recently, I wanted to 1) tone up my arms 2) reduce my sodium intake and 3) get 7 hours of sleep a night. But I don’t stop there – I then create a realistic plan. This translated to 1) going to barre class 2x per week 2) replacing my salty snacks with fruits and veggies and 3) only washing my hair every other day, giving me an extra 45 minutes of sleep – of course, using my Virtuosa shower cap enables this :)
Eliminate bad habits. New Year’s resolutions and diets have never worked for me – it’s too much change at once and I can never stick to it. I believe in introducing small changes more often. I keep a list on my phone of all the things I wish I did better or didn’t do at all – like hitting the snooze button or saying ‘umm’ when I speak. Whenever I come across something I want to work on, I add it to the list. Each week, I pick a new ‘area for improvement’ and focus on that all week. Small wins!
Prioritize how I spend my time. I recently realized that how I spent my time did not match up with what I called my priorities –family, friends and health. I make it a point everyday to add up the time I spend on things I have not prioritized, like checking social media or online shopping. It’s easy to see where all the time I didn’t have to call my mom or go to the gym went! Simply writing it down helps me be more deliberate about how I allocate my time.

Virtuosa Beauty co-founder and CFO Tamara Zagorovskaya shares her morning routine and how she finds ways to save time and feel more productive.
My morning routine used to consist of groggily rolling out of bed, scarfing down a bowl of cereal, and frantically running to the office of my finance job in New York City. Now that I’m nearing the end of business school, I’ve been thinking a lot about my morning routine and experimenting with ways to make it better before I go back into the workforce. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
6:30am: Wake up. As soon as I hear my alarm, I immediately get out of bed. My 2016 resolution was to give up snoozing, so I’ve been trying really hard to get my body moving before I have the chance to roll over and fall back asleep (I love sleep!). Next I brush my teeth, drink some water and make my bed.
6:40am: Meditate. Ever since my boyfriend introduced me to it, I’ve been practicing mindfulness meditation every day for over two years now (even on Mt. Kilimanjaro, see below!) and am a huge fan of the Headspace app. After fifteen minutes of quiet and reflection, my mind feels at ease and I’m focused on the present moment instead of worrying about my to-do list for the day. I finish off with a few yoga poses to stretch out by limbs and bring some energy to my body – my next goal is to incorporate sun salutations into my morning!
7:00am: Shower. Usually I wash my hair every other night, so in the morning I just use a shower cap (of course, I’m a Virtuosa Beauty power user) which saves me thirty minutes each day. I used to wake up at 6am to wash my hair, blow dry and straighten it, but now I get to sleep in over 2 hours each week! My hair is thick and wavy, so right after the shower I use some dry shampoo (Batiste is my personal go-to) to help my hair feel fresh and add some volume. Then I moisturize my face with Aveeno moisturizer with built-in SPF (thank you Mom for teaching me to use sunscreen year-round!).
7:15am: Get dressed. Like many people, I try to pick my outfit the night before so there are less decisions to make in the morning. Lately I’ve been listening to podcasts while I get ready – favorites include This Week in Startups, Product Hunt, and, of course, Serial.
7:30am: Cook breakfast. This is my favorite meal of the day! Most days I microwave steel cut oats with some blueberries, strawberries and almond milk (emphasis on the berries!). Having recently gone to Australia, I’ve become obsessed with avocado toast and sometimes make that with a poached egg for a brekkie treat.
7:40am: Read the news. At this point I check my email for the first time since waking up. I’ve found it really refreshing to spend my first waking hour without looking at my phone so I can enjoy the morning instead of worrying about my to-do list. For the past few years I’ve been reading theSkimm religiously to catch up on what’s happening in the world, and I also browse the Broadsheet for news about women in the world.
8:00am: Head out the door. By now I’m fully awake, so I quickly swipe on some eye shadow and mascara (I hate doing my make-up) and triple check that I have my keys before walking out of my apartment. I recently received a beautiful new coffee mug (see below) that I take with me to grab coffee on the way to class. Ninety minutes after waking up, I’ve had some time to reflect, eat a healthy breakfast and prepare my mind for the day ahead!
